‘We obviously did not have them ready to play’: No. 10 Ole Miss throttled by No. 2 Georgia 42-7

Two-time national championship-winning Georgia football coach Kirby Smart proved his value on Saturday. His No. 2 Bulldogs walked into a stadium where No. 10 Ole Miss had not lost a game since 2024, and didn’t just win, but did so quite convincingly.

Georgia (8-1, 6-1 SEC) scored at will while stifling the Rebels’ offense. The Bulldogs’ ground game was the biggest factor, with the road team amassing 295 rushing yards. Nate Frazier led that effort with 107 yards on 16 carries. Defensively, Georgia buttered its bread by getting into the backfield. The Bulldogs sacked the elusive Ole Miss quarterback, Trinidad Chambliss, 5 times. He had been taken down in the backfield just 6 times in the 8 games before the matchup against Georgia.

“I’m disappointed in the performance. It really started from the first play of the game, and it never stopped,” Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding said. “I did not see that coming. I’m not going to lie to you … We obviously did not have them ready to play. That’s not the product that we want to put on tape. That’s not who we are … Hats off to [Kirby Smart] and Georgia. That was a butt whooping.”

Things fell apart quickly for the home Rebels. After a quick 3-and-out, Georgia marched 72 yards down the field and scored in 7 plays. Another stalled offensive drive by Ole Miss yielded another Georgia touchdown. Trailing 14-0, Golding sent placekicker Lucas Carneiro onto the field to attempt a 58-yard field goal. The long try was no good. Georgia capitalized on having relatively favorable field position and scored another touchdown to go up 21-0 early in the 2nd quarter.

Ole Miss (6-3, 4-3 SEC) failed to find an offensive groove and punted twice more. Georgia, with under 7 minutes to work with before the halftime break, ate roughly 5 minutes of clock and scored on a Gunner Stockton keeper. The Rebels attempted to rebut, with a promising drive being usurped by a Chambliss pick. The halftime score was 28-0 in favor of Georgia.

The second half didn’t play out much differently. Despite forcing the Bulldogs to punt on back-to-back drives, the Ole Miss offense was unable to eat into the deficit. Things went from bad to worse for the Rebels when Chambliss was hit while attempting to pass and fumbled. Georgia recovered the fumble and scored 5 plays later. Ole Miss found the end zone for the first time of the night in the 4th quarter. An 8-yard rush by Shekai Mills-Knight got the Rebels on the board, but it was too little, too late.

“That’s not Ole Miss football. That’s not our standard,” Chambliss said. “Losing 42-7 at home is tough. It’s embarrassing. Going into this game, we knew that we win a lot at home, and we use that to our advantage … Tonight, we just didn’t. It’s tough.”

Chambliss completed 18 of 34 passes for 170 yards and an interception in the matchup. The suboptimal performance arguably ended his Heisman campaign and all but removed the Rebels from the College Football Playoff conversation. The top target for Ole Miss was Horatio Fields, who had 96 yards on 8 catches. Ole Miss had 252 total yards of offense in the matchup. It’s worth noting that Rebel punter Oscar Bird matched that total.
