Residents in Lucedale are toasting to a new law allowing liquor to be sold inside the city’s limits.

Voters took to the polls Tuesday to vote on if the city should continue as a semi-dry municipality, meaning some types of alcohol were legal to sell while others were not.

In 2016, Lucedale approved beer and wine sales but not liquor. Voters overwhelmingly changed that with their collective voice at the ballot box, as 69.2% were in favor of restaurants being able to sell liquor while opening the way for package stores to open. 30.8% voted against the referendum.

The move, which was endorsed before the election by Mayor Doug Lee, brings with it hopes that new businesses and more tourism will be attracted to Lucedale.
