The search for a Smith County man accused of firing at law enforcement officers has shifted several miles east of the original shooting scene as investigators continue to pursue leads in and around the Polkville community.
The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Kevin Clay “KC” Adams, allegedly retrieved a firearm from his vehicle before fleeing on foot and firing at two deputies Friday as they attempted to serve an arrest warrant, according to Smith County Sheriff Joel Houston. The incident occurred on Highway 13 near the Polkville Volunteer Fire Department.
Neither deputy was injured after returning fire, though it remains unclear whether or not Adams was struck. Authorities consider him armed and dangerous.
According to Houston, the last confirmed sighting of Adams was around 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
Investigators have also developed information indicating someone attempted to steal a four-wheeler from a nearby residence, but the vehicle could not be taken because the homeowner had removed the keys.
As the investigation has progressed, authorities have shifted their search to an area about three miles east of where the shooting occurred, where several of Adams’ known associates live. Houston said those individuals, along with Adams’ family, have been cooperative and have assisted investigators.
The search area borders the Bienville National Forest, where investigators believe Adams is familiar with the terrain. Since Saturday, deputies and assisting agencies have searched wooded areas, trails, cutovers, and storage buildings in an effort to locate him.
Houston said Adams has not had access to his cellphone since the incident because it was left at the original scene.
The sheriff thanked residents who have donated water, meals, snacks, and other supplies to officers and emergency personnel involved in the search, as well as local, state, and federal agencies assisting with the manhunt.
Authorities continue to urge residents to remain vigilant by keeping their homes and vehicles locked and removing keys from ATVs, side-by-sides, golf carts, and other recreational vehicles.
Adams is described as 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighs about 125 pounds, and was last seen wearing a green shirt, gray pants, and work boots.
