With New Year’s celebrations approaching, Mississippi Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Mike Chaney is urging residents to practice firework safety to prevent injuries, fires, and property damage.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks sparked more than 32,000 fires nationwide in 2023, causing an estimated $142 million in property damage. Chaney reminded residents that while most standard homeowner’s insurance policies cover accidental fire damage, coverage is not guaranteed in every situation.
“Standard homeowners’ insurance policies cover damage from accidental fires, like those caused by fireworks, but there are exceptions. If you set off fireworks where they are not allowed, your policy might not cover the damage,” he said. “Check local laws to find out if fireworks are legal in your area. Your insurance company can also tell you if there are any fire restrictions in your policy.”
