An inmate being held at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility briefly escaped during visitation on Saturday morning before being recaptured.
Mississippi Department of Corrections officials confirmed to Darkhorse Press that 34-year-old Samuel Coley ran out of the facility in Pearl at approximately 11:25 a.m. and was caught “just yards from the prison fence” by a guard dog.
Coley is serving a sentence for aggravated assault-domestic violence in Warren County, records show. Authorities said he set a woman on fire in August 2022, causing serious burns to her shoulders, upper body, and legs.
Officials also said that Coley has been incarcerated since July 2023 and was scheduled for release in 2030. They added that he has a previous charge on his record, including an attempted bank robbery in 2013.
After being brought back into custody, Coley was transferred to the Walnut Grove Correctional Facility. Officials said he will likely face an additional escape charge in connection with the incident.
