Mississippi was one of the top states where residents moved away from in 2025, according to newly released data.
The annual United Van Lines National Movers Study ranked Mississippi No. 6 among outbound states, with 55% of the company’s moves involving residents leaving the state. The report tracks interstate moving patterns using data collected by United Van Lines, which has studied migration trends for nearly 50 years in addition to its duties as a household goods mover.
According to the study’s survey data, the common reasons Mississippians relocated out of state were new jobs or company transfers, which accounted for 34% of outbound moves, followed by the desire to be closer to family at 27%.
The report also highlighted migration trends within the state’s largest metro areas. Jackson ranked among the top 25 outbound metropolitan statistical areas in the U.S., with 62% of moves classified as outbound.
United Van Lines’ annual study bases its rankings on the percentage of inbound versus outbound moves handled by the company nationwide. The findings are intended to offer insight into broader location patterns and the factors influencing where Americans choose to live.
