Mississippi parents had clear favorites when naming their newborns in 2025, according to a new list released by the Mississippi State Department of Health.

James was the most common name for boys with 163 taking the name statewide. Amelia led the way on the girls side with 113 newborns being named that. The annual rankings – which this year also included lots of Williams, Johns, Noahs, Elijahs, and Charlottes – are compiled by the MSDH Office of Vital Records and Public Health Statistics using provisional birth certificate data to reflect baby naming trends.

The top five baby boy names in Mississippi for 2025 were:

  • James (163)
  • William (157)
  • John (154)
  • Noah (120)
  • Elijah (108)

The top five baby girl names in Mississippi for 2025 were:

  • Amelia (113)
  • Charlotte (104)
  • Olivia (96)
  • Ava (95)
  • Elizabeth (86)

Health officials noted that many names on this year’s list also appeared in 2024, though several saw notable jumps in the rankings. Weston and Stetson climbed among boys’ names, while Delilah, Eden, and Ailany gained popularity on the girls’ side.
